These instructions relate to Red Hat Linux "Fedora Core 1": other documented versions are Red Hat 7.3, Red Hat 8.0 and Red Hat 9.0.
I am sorry that some of the Fedora pages are not written yet... please check back in a few days if a link does not work.

Fedora Core 1 is an open source, leading edge implementation of Linux, intended for developers and enthusiasts who want to keep abreast of the latest technology. If you want everything to work "out of the box" do not use it! See my list of "Fedora Annoyances" to decide whether to go ahead. If you decide to avoid Fedora and require a stable, supported, commercial version of Linux for use in a production environment, you should consider Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Unfortunately I am not able to offer any advice on RHEL or other versions of Linux not documented here.

Note: the instructions assume that you have successfully installed Fedora Core 1 and have applied the current updates, using "up2date". If you do not do this, some of the features described below may not work. For future updates, you can use an alternative update agent such as Ximian Red Carpet (be aware that the Red Carpet daemon package crashes on installation with a segmentation fault unless you install rcd version 1.x first).
